The Possible Benefits of Lutein 20mg, a Dietary Supplement
• Help support vision health by protecting macular tissue from photo-oxidation and preventing oxidative damage*
Lutein belongs to the carotenoid family of antioxidants. Lutein has been found in the eye, brain, breast and cervix. Research has shown lutein to be supportive for vision health.* In the eye, it is found mainly in the macular region, as well as the entire retina, ciliary iris bodies and lens. As an antioxidant, lutein helps protect macular tissue from photo-oxidation by filtering blue light, and prevents oxidative damage by free radical quenching.* Adequate levels of lutein in the eye may potentially be supportive in the absorption and dissipation of damaging UV radiation.* Research shows that lutein supplementation can increase serum levels of lutein, and increase macular pigment density.*
Two of the most important nutrients for eye health are lutein and zeaxanthin. Many studies have examined the link between lutein and zeaxanthin concentrations in the macula, dietary intake, and macular degeneration. In one study of 356 subjects, researchers determined there was a 57 percent decreased ARMD risk in subjects with the highest intake of lutein/zeaxanthin (6 mg daily), compared to subjects with the lowest intake (0.5 mg daily).
In the last five years, three double-blind, intervention studies have investigated the role of lutein supplementation in ARMD. In one 12-month study of 14 ARMD patients, researchers found improvements of up to 92 percent in visual acuity tests after subjects consumed a diet containing 5 ounces of spinach – approximately 14 mg lutein – 4.7 times weekly.
In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study published in 2004, 90 males with atrophic ARMD consumed either 10 mg lutein, 10 mg lutein plus a broad spectrum formula containing antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, or a placebo for one year. In the lutein group, there was a 36 percent increase in macular pigment density (MPD) and in the group consuming antioxidants with lutein there was a 43 percent increase in MPD. Placebo-treated subjects experienced a slight decrease in MPD. Maintaining macular pigment density is thought to be crucial for visual acuity.
Lutein supplementation also resulted in significant improvements in visual acuity, objective visual function parameters, photo-stress recovery, and contrasts sensitivity.
In addition, new research indicates that the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin protect the healthy eyes of subjects exposed to glare.
Although these two carotenoids have been tested for their effects on reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration, in this study, lutein and zeaxanthin appear to improve eye health even in subjects with healthy eyes.
Forty healthy subjects (average age approximately 23 years old) were assigned to receive daily supplements of lutein (10 mg) and zeaxanthin (2 mg) for six months. The scientists then studied how the carotenoids affected the subjects’ reaction to glare, which is commonly experienced in bright sunlight, when staring at a computer monitor, and when facing the bright beams of oncoming headlights.
Researchers determined lutein and zeaxanthin’s effects on glare by studying how the carotenoids affected macular pigment optical density (MPOD), a measure of the eye's ability to filter short-wave light. The study authors reported that the MPOD of the eyes had increased from an average value of 0.41 at the start of the study, to 0.57 after six months of supplementation with the carotenoids.
Furthermore, when the volunteers performed visual tasks following exposure to glare, lutein and zeaxanthin supplements significantly reduced the damaging effects of the exposure for both the visual performance tasks assessed.
The researchers concluded, “Four to 6 months of 12mg daily lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation significantly increases MPOD and improves visual performance in glare for most subjects.”
