The Possible Benefits of Extension Phytonutrient, a Dietary Supplement
• The standardized botanical extracts and food concentrates provided in Extension Phytonutrient have been shown to support healthy liver, heart, circulatory and immune function

Beta-sitosterol
One of the main subcomponents of a group of plant sterols known as phytosterols, is a white, waxy substance. While beta-sitosterol has a chemical structure that is very similar to that of cholesterol, it is only manufactured by plants, not by mammals

Controlling Cholesterol
For the last 30-plus years, beta-sitosterol has been known to safely reduce cholesterol levels. Beta-sitosterol’s close chemical resemblance to cholesterol allows it to be incorporated into mammal cellular membranes, thereby blocking the absorption of cholesterol by competitive inhibition. Though beta-sitosterol is not well-absorbed by the body (5-10%), when consumed with cholesterol it effectively blocks cholesterol’s absorption, resulting in lower serum cholesterol levels. Beta-sitosterol has also been shown to favorably influence lipoprotein (HDL, LDL) profiles.

Promoting Prostate Health
Dr. Ward Dean previously described a number of herbal preparations shown to help prevent and treat prostate problems like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). These herbs include saw palmetto extract, Pygeum africanum, and stinging nettle. In Europe, herbal preparations are often considered prescription drugs. These plant sterols improve prostate symptom scores, improve quality of life, and reduce urine volume and residual urine levels. Incredibly, they exert these apparent benefits without reducing the size of the prostate! Beta-sitosterol - alone or as a constituent of one of the other herbs - is one of the major active constituents in these herbal preparations.

Boosts Immunity
Beta-sitosterol may give a boost to athletes involved in endurance sports. Marathon runners and endurance athletes often suffer from immune suppression and reduced inflammatory response during intense training periods and post event. Beta-sitosterol has been shown to prevent this breakdown in the immune system. Beta-sitosterol was also noted to enhance lymphocyte proliferation and NK-cell activity. This enhancement of the immune system should be of benefit to anyone wishing to boost their immune status, specially during times of physical stress or active disease process.

Red wine and green tea
Both red wine and green tea inhibit VacA, a toxin generated by the ulcer-causing bacteria H. Pylori, according to a recent study. Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that resides in the stomach lining and is thought to be responsible for stomach cancer and ulcers, emits a toxin called VacA that causes tissue damage. Researchers tested polyphenols from green tea and red wine to determine how they effected VacA. The scientists discovered that polyphenols from both of these substances stopped the damaging effects of VacA. The study authors concluded, These observations suggest that polyphenols or polyphenol derivatives may be useful in the prevention or cure of H. pylori-associated gastric diseases.

Researchers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have discovered that curcumin, a component of the spice turmeric, can stop the spread of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow. In the study, the scientists investigated the way curcumin affected multiple myeloma cell lines. The spice-derived component stopped the activation of processes known to lead to the spread of the myeloma cells. Curcumin also triggered apoptosis - a process where cells program themselves to die - in the cancer cells. Based on the results of their study, the researchers suggested that patients suffering from multiple myelomas be treated with this pharmacologically safe agent.

Milk thistle
In a review of the medical literature published in the January 2005 issue of the International Journal of Oncology, researchers concluded that Silymarin, a plant flavonoid isolated from the seeds of milk thistle, shows promise in protecting the skin against damage from ultraviolet radiation.

Several environmental and genetic factors are involved in skin cancer induction, the reviewers noted. However, exposure to chemical carcinogens and solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation are primarily responsible for several skin diseases including skin cancer. Chronic exposure of solar UV radiation to the skin leads to basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Reviewers observed that Silymarin, in animal studies, has been shown to protect against skin cancer in animals exposed to chemical carcinogens as well as against skin cancer caused by UV radiation. In a number of studies, topical treatment resulted in inhibition of skin cancer in mice treated with chemical tumor promoters or exposed to UVB radiation. In addition, evidence gathered from at least one animal study suggests that Silymarin consumed orally may also afford protection against skin cancer.

The reviewers note that a wide range of in vivo studies indicate that Silymarin possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties that may lead to the prevention of skin cancer during in vivo animal models.

"The available experimental information suggests that Silymarin is a promising chemopreventive and pharmacologically safe agent, which can be exploited or tested against skin cancer in the human system," the researchers concluded. "Moreover, Silymarin may favorably supplement sunscreen protection and provide additional anti-photocarcinogenic protection."
