The Possible Benefits of L-Glutamine, a Dietary Supplement
• Helps to conserve muscle glycogen stores, stimulate growth hormone production, support neuronal health and cross the blood-brain barrier where the brain uses it for fuel*
• May enhance health of the digestive system*
Growth hormone (GH) is released by the pituitary gland in the brain. GH is responsible for enhancing muscle growth, burning fat and maintaining the immune system. Many scientists have linked the changes seen with aging - loss of lean body mass, thinning of the skin and an increase in adipose (fat) tissue, to the decline in growth hormone that begins in the human body by the age of 30.
Growth hormone is a concern of many athletes and life-extension enthusiasts, who commonly use amino acid supplements to boost levels of this important hormone. Anecdotal evidence is plentiful that amino acid supplements can offer anabolic effects consistent with growth hormone release.
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in human muscle and plasma, directly regulating both the production and wearing-down of protein and immune cell activity. When 9 healthy subjects consumed 2 grams of oral glutamine 45 minutes after a light breakfast, 8 of the 9 subjects experienced elevated plasma growth hormone within 90 minutes. Some studies have also demonstrated that a dosage of 2g of supplemental Glutamine per day increases Human Growth Hormone (hGH) levels by up to 400%. These findings demonstrate that a surprisingly small oral glutamine load is capable of elevating plasma growth hormone.*
In the small intestine, glutamine is converted into citruline, which in turn triggers the synthesis of arginine, an amino acid shown to release growth hormone in some studies. Moreover, glutamine is converted into glutamate, which can directly enhance growth hormone secretion. 60% of free-form amino acids floating in skeletal muscles is L-glutamine. L-glutamine plays a very important role in protein metabolism, and it appears to be a very important nutrient for body builders. When supplemented, it may help body builders reduce the amount of muscle deterioration that occurs because other tissues that need glutamine will not rob the glutamine stored in the muscle cells.*
Athletes who train excessively may cause depletion of their glutamine stores from the muscles, liver and blood plasma. Glutamine can help by preventing the breakdown of proteins within the muscles (by preventing catabolism and muscle loss) during and after intensive Exercise. When excessive quantities of Lactic Acid are produced as a result of strenuous Exercise (resulting in Lactic Acidosis), Glutamine is catabolized from the Muscles and transferred to the bloodstream where it is utilized in the detoxification of Lactic Acid. Supplemental Glutamine therefore "spares" the body's existing Glutamine reserves in the Muscles.*
In addition, athletes who engage in intensive exercises without adequate time for recovery may be at risk for infection and also, often recover slowly from injuries. It has been found that plasma glutamine is decreased in athletes following endurance exercise which is partly responsible for the immunosuppression that occurs in endurance athletes. Glutamine can help counteract this suppression of the immune system by facilitating the clearance of detrimental bacteria from the blood stream and enhancing the function of the white blood cells.*
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel disease is characterized by damage to the mucosal lining of the small and or large intestines. This can lead to inflammation, infection and ulceration of the intestinal walls. L-Glutamine helps to repair damage to the intestines and alleviates intestinal permeability (by functioning as a 'fuel' for the villi cells of the intestinal wall, thereby helping to heal the damaged intestinal wall that is an underlying cause of intestinal permeability. At a dosage of 1g to 4g daily, L-glutamine may help to alleviate diarrhoea, ulcers, abdominal pain and food allergies associated with ulcerative colitis.*
Nervous System
In the brain, L-glutamine can be converted to glutamic acid which is highly concentrated in the brain and functions as a direct source of energy for the brain. In situation where the brain is not receiving enough glucose, it compensates by increasing glutamine metabolism for energy. L-glutamine is also a substrate for the production of neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) which helps to induce relaxation and sleep. *
