"Gly-Control is a carefully designed nutriceutical complex clinically formulated for the maintenance of healthy blood sugar levels, as well as protection against and improvement of insulin resistance and its long term complications, and, in addition, helps to regulate blood lipid levels and promote weight loss and control obesity via increased lipolysis of triglycerides (fat breakdown) and increased lipid oxidative catabolism and mitochondrial activity (fat burning). It also helps inhibit the formation of toxic, advanced glycation end products (AGEs) by normalizing blood glucose levels"
Dr Mitchell Fleisher, M.D., D.Ht., D.A.B.F.M., Dc.A.B.C.T Mechanisms of Action:
Excessive blood glucose levels, as seen in pre-diabetic and diabetic states, are associated with manifestations of chronic degenerative disease, including atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), cerebral vascular accidents (CVAs or strokes), peripheral vascular disease, gangrene, eye diseases (cataracts, macular degeneration, etc.), kidney diseases and a host of other problems. Excessive blood glucose exerts its deleterious metabolic effects via the generation of toxic, advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs are toxic metabolites of the glycosylation of proteins, lipoproteins and glycoproteins that occur as a result of the spontaneous, non-enzymatic reaction between sugars, especially glucose, and peptides. This process is accelerated in the presence of hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, micro- and macrovascular disease via multiple mechanisms, including increased nonenzymatic glycation and glycooxidation, aldose reductase activity, activation of protein kinase C and oxidative-nitrosative stress. AGEs create cross-linkages between biomolecules resulting in damage to their structure and function. Cross-linking is a deleterious process in part responsible for many chronic, degenerative diseases, including arteriosclerosis, hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes, cancer, cataracts, etc., and aging itself.
Gymnema sylvestre extract is an Ayurvedic herbal medicine from the Asclepediaceae family, which provides triterpene glycoside gymnemic acids and saponins that have been demonstrated to help regenerate pancreatic beta cells within the islets of Langerhans, thereby improving production and secretion of insulin resulting in normalization of blood glucose levels. Gymnema may also inhibit the intestinal absorption of glucose, as well as lower triglyceride blood levels. Maximum benefits from Gymnema gradually accrue over 2 years from the onset of therapy. Clinical studies have shown that diabetic patients experience a significant reduction in blood glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin (HgbA1C) and glycosylated plasma proteins. The anti-hyperglycemic effect occurs only in patients with abnormal glucose metabolism and diabetes mellitus, whereas it has no effect on blood sugar levels in normal, healthy people. There is evidence that Gymnema may help alleviate and prevent the onset of Types 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, Gymnema sylvestre may aid in the reduction of appetite and carbohydrate cravings and help prevent and control obesity.
Momordica charantia (Bitter melon) extract is a Traditional Chinese herbal medicine from the Cucurbitaceae family providing charantin, monocharins and polypeptide-P, which can lower blood glucose without increasing insulin levels. Momordica is believed to produce its hypoglycemic effects by suppressing glucose transport from the small intestine, as well as induction of a 4 to 5 fold increase in glycogen synthesis in the liver, a fact observed in validated animal research models of diabetes. Clinical studies in humans showed that Momordica may significantly lower fasting and postprandial (post-eating) serum glucose levels in up to 86% of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Research in animal models has also demonstrated that Momordica may help promote weight loss and control obesity by increasing lipolysis (breakdown of fat) and decreasing triglyceride fat accumulation in tissues via enhanced sympathetic nervous system and catecholamine activity that increase the catabolism (burning) of fats as metabolic fuel for cellular energy production.
Galega officinalis (Goat's Rue) extract is an old European herbal medicine from the Leguminosae family providing galegine (2-methyl-2-butenyl-guanidine) and guanidine, a form of guanylhydrazine that is the herbal prototype of biguanide pharmaceutical drugs such as metformin and phenformin, which lowers blood glucose by decreasing insulin resistance. Galega may also help to prevent the cellular and tissue damage caused by cross-linking through the inhibition of the formation of AGEs.
Cinnulin PF® is a proprietary extract of Cinnamomum (Cinnamon bark) that contains methylhydroxy chalcone polymer (MHCP) and type A polyphenol polymers that have been clinically shown to mimic and powerfully potentiate insulin via activation of insulin receptors, as well as to lower blood sugar levels by increasing glucose uptake into cells and enhancing glycogenogenesis (glycogen formation; glycogen is the storage form of glucose). Cinnamon bark also contains cinnamaldehyde and quercitrin, both potent inhibitors of the enzyme aldose reductase. Aldose reductase inhibition has been shown to improve myocardial glucose metabolism and to protect the myocardium from ischemia. Cinnamon polyphenols have also been shown to reduce serum LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides that help to reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
L-Glutamine, an essential amino acid, may help reduce appetite and carbohydrate cravings via its role as an energy source for brain metabolism, as well as to lower both serum glucose and insulin levels by as much as 50% in hyperglycemic individuals, as seen in pre-diabetic and diabetic states. The attenuation of hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia helps promote fat catabolism and weight loss.
Chromium, an essential trace mineral, has been shown to help regulate and normalize blood glucose levels in both diabetes and hypoglycemia. Clinical studies in humans have demonstrated that chromium, especially in the picolinate form (picolinic acid, a metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan, forms stable complexes with transitional metal ions, which results in an improved bioavailability of metallic cationic chromium), may help improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance in types 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus, resulting in inhibition of AGE formation, thereby preventing diabetic complications, as well as to decrease total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B (the principal protein of the LDL cholesterol fraction) and raise HDL cholesterol, thus reducing the risk factors associated with chronic degenerative diseases. Most researchers investigating chromium picolinate believe that the increased longevity it produces in animal research models are due to its effects on reducing protein damage caused by poor glucose and insulin metabolism. Chromium picolinate has been reported to decrease the percentage of total body fat and increase lean body mass, as well as to enhance the effects of exercise on glucose and fat metabolism, which may promote weight loss and control of obesity in humans.
Vanadium, an essential micromineral, has been shown to help prevent and improve insulin resistance in diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2, as well as to help control hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia and promote weight loss in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients via its ability to mimic the metabolic effects of insulin and improve pancreatic beta cell insulin storage and secretory function. Research studies in both animals and humans have demonstrated that the vanadyl ion and its complexes may be effective not only in significantly helping to ameliorate insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes, but also in preventing the onset of diabetes mellitus.
