Results of human research trials agree with how cranberry fruit has been used for centuries: to effectively and gently promote urinary tract health in men and women. Cranberry concentrate is a favourite among young adults and seniors. Individuals concerned with their urinary tract health often take cranberry capsules on a regular basis; others get benefit from taking capsules as needed. Everyone agrees that prevention is the best-use.
How does cranberry work?
Typically, urinary tract issues are caused by invading bacteria and cranberry appears to reduce the amount and length-of-stay of these invading bacteria. It was originally believed that the benefits of cranberry were due to its acidic nature, but research indicates that cranberry interferes with the ability of invading bacteria to adhere to tissue lining, thereby making an unfriendly environment for the invading bacteria.
Cranberry fruit also promotes healthy heart and blood vessels. Researchers report that cranberry reduces oxidation of low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and this is good news because oxidized LDL-cholesterol contributes to the formation of undesirable arterial plaque*. Cranberry fruit is a natural food with a history of traditional use and contemporary health benefits.
A report in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy indicates that cranberry extract can reduce the recurrence of chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs) in older women. A large number of previous studies have shown that cranberry extract can stop E. coli, a common cause of UTIs, from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract. Because the bacteria are unable to stick to the walls, they are flushed out of the body.
In the current study, researchers compared the effectiveness of cranberry extract with a low-dose antibiotic commonly used to prevent the recurrence of chronic urinary tract infections in women who are predisposed to developing this condition. 137 women with two or more antibiotic-treated UTIs in the previous 12 months were randomized to receive either 500 mg of cranberry extract or 100 mg of the antibiotic trimethoprim for 6 months.
The researchers found that the time to first recurrence of a UTI was not significantly different between the cranberry and antibiotic groups. The median time to recurrence of UTI was 84.5 days for the cranberry group and 91 days for the antibiotic group. There were 17/137 (12 percent) withdrawals from the study, 6/69 (9 percent) from the cranberry group and 11/68 (16 percent) from the antibiotic group.
According to the researchers, “Trimethoprim had a very limited advantage over cranberry extract in the prevention of recurrent UTIs in older women and had more adverse effects. Our findings will allow older women with recurrent UTIs to weigh up with their clinicians the inherent attractions of a cheap, natural product like cranberry extract whose use does not carry the risk of antimicrobial resistance or super-infection with Clostridium difficile or fungi.”
Pure and concentrated, Vitamin Research Products Cranberry Concentrate, is a cost-effective and reliable way to get the goodness of cranberries without sugar and excess calories. In addition, Cranberry Concentrate capsules are easy to travel with.
